This book explicates the complexity of Sundanese elite of West
Java during the 19-20th century. It is important work to understand the
lifestyle of aristocracy whose role became middlemen agent between colonial
ruler and people in the Indonesia’s pre-independence period. While most studies on Java
aristocracy tend to investigate the central and east part of Javanese social
structure, this book reveals the detail of local rulers which are called Menak.
It is interesting to find out how Dutch colonial shaped Indonesia elite’s
mentality and structure which later on play significant role in forming the social
and political orientation of Sundanese people.
